Tomatoes!

The tomatoes are starting to come in. Not all varieties we planted for this season are ready yet. So far, we have…

Red tomatoes, great for cooking and canning. $3 per pound.

Pink beefsteak tomatoes, to slice for your burgers. $3 per pound.

Heirloom Paul Robeson tomatoes bring the big, bold flavor, perfect for a BLT. $4 per pound.

Mixed cherry tomatoes for sweet and tangy snacks, $5 per pound.

New item: eggplant. These are a happy medium between big Italian-style eggplants and slender Asian-style eggplants, so they are wonderful for all manner of cooking. Our favorite is to grill or roast until tender and mash with olive oil and spices for baba ghanouj. $2 per pound.

Pattypan squash make tasty calabacitas and can be used the same as other summer squash. $2 per pound.

Persian cucumbers are $3 per pound. Our bread and butter pickles made with these cucumbers are $10 per pint.

We have yardlong beans (Chinese noodle beans) and garden beans, $2 per 8 ounces. We plan to make more bean pickles later this week.

Speaking of pickles, we have celtuce pickles in wheat-free soy sauce, a crunchy treat with an savory umami flavor. We also have a few jars of blackcurrant jam left; it will sell out soon.

We always have greens: sweet potato greens, New Zealand spinach, amaranth, sorrel, and Swiss chard.

And let’s not forget the herbs: basil, parsley, thyme, oregano, and more.

Since the tomatoes are here, we are taking a break from baking sourdough bread until the end of the growing season. And we are adding Friday to our open hours. Please come see us Tuesday-Friday, 9am-5pm. 14 Gonzales Rd, Belen. 505-302-5657. Please park in our driveway and buzz the doorbell for service (it buzzed our phones). We’ll see you soon.

Tomatoes

The tomatoes seem to start with a trickle and then progress into a downpour. These are the first; they will sell out quickly and more is yet to come. Assorted cherry tomatoes: $5 per 12-ounce pint. All other tomatoes currently available (not all varieties are ready yet), $3 per pound.

Our Persian cucumber harvest is growing stronger; they are $3 per pound. No lemon cucumbers yet.

Beets are harvesting well; $2 per pound.

The garden beans that the July heatwave tried to defeat are making a comeback: $2 per 8 ounces. More beans are on the way…we expect to have yardlong beans soon.

Greens include sweet potato greens, lamb’s quarters (quelites), New Zealand spinach (taste and texture like purslane/verdolagas), lemony sorrel, and Swiss chard. We love greens: put them in soups, stews, stir-fries, pastas, casseroles, enchiladas, with beans, with eggs.

Herbs picked to order: basil, parsley, onion chives, garlic chives, sage, thyme, oregano, and more…

We still have black currant jam and celtuce pickles. More preserved foods will come as the harvest continues.

Our sourdough bread for Saturday Mornings on Becker Avenue is green chile and cheese. These 8 loaves are your last chance for sourdough until the killing frost (Octoberish) ends our harvest season. We simply do not have the time or space to bake when every horizontal surface in our house is covered with tomatoes. After the growing season, we will be baking a lot more; stay tuned.

Our direct from farm sales are Tuesday-Thursday, 9am-5pm. 14 Gonzales Rd, Belen. 505-302-5657. Please park in our driveway and ring our doorbell for service (it buzzes our phones).

Thank you customers!

Our cucumber pickles and dehydrated apples sold out today. We’ll make more cucumber pickles as our plants produce more cucumbers.

However, we do not have apple trees; we were given those apples by a neighbor. If you have excess apples, we have a solar dehydrator…let’s make a mutually beneficial partnership.
