Spinach

Late addition: this is New Zealand spinach. It has mild-flavored succulent leaves like purslane/verdolagas.

Cucumbers!

Coming up at Saturday Mornings on Becker Avenue:

Persian cucumbers. No, not Armenian cucumbers (we love those too). These are spineless, burpless, never bitter, and great for fresh eating or pickling.

Also baby beets, yum!

Blackcurrant jam. It’s sweet, a little sour, with luscious summer berry flavor.

Lots of greens. Sweet potato, amaranth, and lemony sorrel pictured here. We also have lamb’s quarters (quelites), and Swiss chard.

For pickles we have rattail radishes and celtuce in wheat-free soy sauce.

The sourdough selection is green chile and cheese.

Show your Rocket Punch love with a hand-screened logo t-shirt.

We also have pizza peels, bread boards, and cheese boards made from natural exotic woods.

Find us at 201 Becker Ave, 8am-1pm. Folks line up for sourdough at 7:30am; it sells out fast.

Beets!

New item: beets with their greens.

And speaking of greens, our greens are still our rock stars. We have sweet potato greens, amaranth, lamb’s quarters (quelites), lemony sorrel, basil, onion chives, garlic chives, and other herbs.

For pickles, we have celtuce in wheat-free soy sauce and rattail radish pickles.

Tomato Watch continues. If you like them green, we might have a couple that you could fry up. Our beans are still recovering from the July heat wave.

The sourdough bread available exclusively at Saturday Mornings on Becker Avenue will be green chile and cheese.

Regular business hours for direct-from-farm sales are Tuesday-Thursday, 9am-5pm or by appointment. 14 Gonzales Rd, Belen. 505-302-5657.

July 23, Saturday

Today at Saturday Mornings on Becker Avenue:

The famous (infamous?) green chile and cheese sourdough. Sales begin at 8am and folks start lining up at 7:30am. $15, cash only.

‘Conrad’ hardneck garlic, named for the family who owned the farmland where it was discovered by our friend in KY. It seems to be well-adapted to NM since it grew fist-sized heads of garlic.

Sweet potato greens, which can be used the same as spinach in any recipe. Delicious stir-fried, we’re going to use it to make stracciatella (Italian egg drop soup) for supper later.

Mammoth basil leaves, parsley, and chives (not pictured). Save $1 when you buy our DIY pesto pack of all three herbs.

Much to our surprise, we got a few more purple snap peas off our plants during this week’s heatwave. We like being pleasantly surprised.

We also have garden beans and garden bean pickles with achari masala, a mix of cumin and other spices that’s savory, sour, and with a mild heat. And speaking of pickles, we also have celtuce preserved in wheat-free soy sauce as well as rattail radish pickles.

As always, we have our hand-screened logo t-shirts and our exotic wooden kitchen items.

Our booth is no longer in front of Silver-Bar Studios (go check them out, they open at 10am), but on the main lot at 201 Becker Ave.

Lettuce help you

We’re picking a lot of lettuce. We’re enjoying it for both lunch and dinner and we’ve still got plenty to share. So we’re having a one-day sale tomorrow at Saturday Mornings on Becker Avenue: our 8-ounce bags of mixed lettuces, normally $4 per bag, are now reduced to $3 per bag. Buy extra because our Belen-grown pesticide-free lettuce stays fresh in the fridge for over a week.

For your garden, we still have a few rooted purple sweet potato slips ($1 each) and enormous sunflower seeds (not pictured, free).

Our sourdough bread is beer and barley, a collaboration with and inspired by Hub City Brewing Company. $15. Come early or be disappointed…it sells out fast.

We also have our hand-screened logo t-shirts and kitchen goods made from exotic natural woods.

Find us in front of Silver-Bar Studios from 8am-1pm, where we’ll also be celebrating the musical gifts that keyboardist Andy Fletcher shared with us through over 40 years of Depeche Mode.

Salads

Why not have a big salad for dinner with homemade Green Goddess dressing? We’ve got all the fresh lettuce and herbs you need.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

We’ve begun to harvest our spring-planted lettuces, which hold up to higher temperatures. Previously, we were harvesting our fall-planted lettuces, the season for which is coming to an end. No worries, spring lettuces to the rescue.

We still have onion chives, garlic chives, thyme, lovage, tarragon, sage, and salad burnet. New this week: oregano, parsley, and cilantro. All herbs are picked fresh to order.

And here’s a teaser for Saturday Mornings on Becker Avenue: we picked up some red chile and raw honey from Ravenshire LLC. Our Saturday Mornings-exclusive sourdough bread will have some sweet heat.

Direct from farm sales are Tue-Thu, 9am-5pm. You’ll find us at 14 Gonzales Rd, Belen, just off River/Reinken. Please park in our driveway and come to our front door for service. If we don’t answer immediately, call 505-302-5657, as we’re probably working out back or assisting other customers.
