Easiest Indoor Seed Starting

FEBRUARY:

  • Lettuce (look for varieties described as “slow to bolt” or “heat tolerant”)
  • Bunching onions
  • Cold-hardy annual/biennial herbs like dill and parsley
  • Perennial herbs like oregano and thyme
  • Large Brassica greens like collards and kale

MARCH:

  • Tomatoes
  • Basil
  • Swiss chard
  • Sweet potatoes (not started from seed…grow your own slips from stored or purchased sweet potato tubers)

APRIL:

  • Chiles including jalapeños
  • New Zealand spinach (so much easier than winter spinach)
  • Marigolds
  • In mid-to-late April when soil temperature is consistently above 50F at 7am (buy a soil thermometer!), directly sow peas and seed potatoes

MAY (all of these can be directly sown once the soil reaches 60F…they grow quickly):

  • Cucumbers
  • Small cantaloupe varieties
  • Yellow squash and zucchini
  • Zinnias
  • Direct sow: sunflowers…they don’t transplant well

JUNE:

  • Butternut squash (can also be directly sown)
  • Direct sow: asparagus beans aka yardlong beans

—NO SEED STARTING IN JULY AND AUGUST, IT’S TOO DANG HOT—

SEPTEMBER:

  • Lettuce (look for varieties described as “good for overwintering” or “cold hardy.”)

OCTOBER:

  • Garlic (directly sown)

Agriculture Appreciation Day

We are pleased to share that Rocket Punch Farm will be participating in Agriculture Appreciation Day. We will be giving the 11am presentation entitled “Growing A Small Farm.” Additionally, we will be offering herb and vegetable seedlings appropriate for late March planting. Please see the flyer for additional details about the event.

Why not have a big salad for dinner with homemade Green Goddess dressing? We’ve got all the fresh lettuce and herbs you need.

We’ve begun to harvest our spring-planted lettuces, which hold up to higher temperatures. Previously, we were harvesting our fall-planted lettuces, the season for which is coming to an end. No worries, spring lettuces to the rescue.

We still have onion chives, garlic chives, thyme, lovage, tarragon, sage, and salad burnet. New this week: oregano, parsley, and cilantro. All herbs are picked fresh to order.

And here’s a teaser for Saturday Mornings on Becker Avenue: we picked up some red chile and raw honey from Ravenshire LLC. Our Saturday Mornings-exclusive sourdough bread will have some sweet heat.

Direct from farm sales are Tue-Thu, 9am-5pm. You’ll find us at 14 Gonzales Rd, Belen, just off River/Reinken. Please park in our driveway and come to our front door for service. If we don’t answer immediately, call 505-302-5657, as we’re probably working out back or assisting other customers.

Thank you to our customers who came by yesterday. We also have limited quantities of parsley and cilantro available.
